adventuresinfilm asked: Re: wanting a 'proper' medium format camera. I have a Pentax 645, and there is much to recommend - unless square format images are essential. Compared to something like a Bronica ETRS, the Pentax is more compact (as everything is built in) and less clunky to use - shoots just like a 35mm auto exposure/manual focus SLR. They made an autofocus version too.

It looks like a beast, but it's surprisingly gentle. Whereas you can literally feel a Hasselblad or Pentax 6x7 go off when you hit the shutter, the P645 is super-smooth. I've gotten away with some ludicrously slow shutter speeds hand-held.

Otherwise, Yashica-Mat 124G TLR?

Niall,

Thanks for the input. I’ve thought about this a lot recently. I just purchased a new digital SLR so it may be a while before I make another purchase but I have seriously considered the Pentax 645 because of its resemblance to an SLR, and I love working with SLRs. Regarding the aspect ratio- I actually prefer the 6x7 ratio over square format.

I’ve also considered a yashica mat, but I honestly don’t think I’d like a TLR as I like to be able to see precisely what I’m shooting so there’s no guess work, and have the option to switch lenses.

What I began to realize as I was contemplating all the choices was that I want something similar to an SLR, but something that handles like a true medium format camera. I wouldn’t be using it the same way I use my 35mm cameras, I’d be using for portraiture and less spontaneous things. I think a Hassy would be perfect for me, but way out of my price range right now. I may go with a Kiev 88 honestly. I’ve heard great things about them.

Thanks for the advice and the follow!

Chloe.
