Sold my F5 and bought a rangefinder to use for my 365 days on film project. There is just nothing like a completely mechanical camera to me. I found myself using my Nikkormat much more than the F5 for that reason, so decided it was time to make room for someone new. This is my first rangefinder- an Olympus 35SP. Can’t wait to take it for a spin!

Crap.
I went on a two hour hike yesterday to shoot some images for a photography contest. It was bitterly cold and tiring. I had to use a new film because my local lab didn’t have my usual Plus-X in stock. I figured it would be okay because I thought I had a good recipe, but when I pulled my negs from the tank I realized right away that they were underdeveloped. Crap. I have lower lows with film...

katietales-deactivated20110812 asked: hey there,

sorry to bother you.. I came across your blog when doing some research into the nikkormat FT2! I got one for myself finally (it arrived today), but i'm having a few issues with it and i was wondering if you could help.

Basically I noticed that if I change the lens apature the opening doesn't change (it's at its most open, even when I change...

The Photographist: Incomplete Manifesto for Growth... →
Probably my first reblog ever, but this is too good not to share. Click through to read the entirety of it if you know whats good for you. photographist: 1. Allow events to change you. You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you. You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth: the openness to experience events and the willingness to be...

New Photo Project.
I haven’t posted anything in a week, but rest assured I’m shooting every day. I’ve been working on a new photo project using a friends’ Mamiya RB67. It is such a pleasure to work with. I think I may buy it from him. I’m shooting the whole thing without a light meter of any kind so I’m crossing my fingers that I guessed the exposures right.  It will be about...

Some More Kick-ass Photographers.
When I don’t have the opportunity to go out and shoot, I like to get lost in the work of other artists. Then when I do get some time, I feel so much more inspired and invigorated.  Emily Shur. Elizabeth Weinberg. Joshua Lutz. Jacqueline Di Milia. Luckily, I’m going to get some time to shoot between Christmas and new years and I have a few shots in my head already.

Mamiya.
A friend of mine is letting me borrow his Mamiya RB67 over the holidays!  Very excited. And nervous that he won’t be able to pry it out of my hands…

Critical Mass.
I have spent my night looking through all the images from the 2010 Critical Mass top 50. There are some amazing collections of images. Here is a small list I put together of the websites of my favourite photographers from the bunch. If you have a night to kill and could use some inspiration, go explore their sites.  Claire Beckett. Annie Musselman. Elin Høyland. Loli Kantor. Rania Matar.  ...

Ideas!
I have way, way too many personal photography project ideas swirling around in my head right now! It seems its either feast or famine in terms of inspiration. Right now I am bursting with it and I’m just going to let it burst!

I am so sick of the aspect ratio of 35mm film! I do, however, love the 4:5 ratio and find myself cropping a lot of my images to that shape. Uh oh. I see a 4x5 camera in my future.  Edit- I’m not sure how to respond to comments, but you’re right Nathan. My mistake! I was looking at the aspect ratio of motion picture film.

There are certain records I will never get tired of hearing. One of them is Supertramp’s ‘Crime of the Century’. I’ve been listening to it since I was a little kid and it still gives me goosebumps. Since becoming a photographer I now feel a much greater affinity with all artists. Because really, we are all striving for that same thing: to create that one song, painting,...

offcuts asked: Re you one film image a day, over on photonfantastic, I'm going to do that too. I like all the 365 projects on Flickr, but there's kind of an assumption that you're going to do it digitally so you'll probably be posting pretty close to when you took the picture and you'll most probably be posting the pictures in order. I want mine displayed in order, but I don't want...

adventuresinfilm asked: Re: wanting a 'proper' medium format camera. I have a Pentax 645, and there is much to recommend - unless square format images are essential. Compared to something like a Bronica ETRS, the Pentax is more compact (as everything is built in) and less clunky to use - shoots just like a 35mm auto exposure/manual focus SLR. They made an autofocus version too.

It looks like a...
